Tips for looking your best on camera…
We all prefer to look our best when in front of the camera, and you will by following the simple guidelines listed below.
Before going to your closet to select your “favorite” outfit, bear in mind that the video camera “sees” color, pattern, and contrast differently than the human eye does.
It’s important to dress for the way the camera sees you.
The most important rule to follow in selecting your on-camera outfit, is to keep it on the low-key side. We want the audience to focus on you; your face and what you have to say, not what you are wearing.
Looking Good!
Do
- Wear colors in the medium range: medium blue, green, maroon, wine, pink, dark gray, purple, etc… If this is outside the style you’re naturally comfortable in, take this as a suggestion, while being aware the camera “sees” colors and patterns differently.
- Dress in clothes that you feel most comfortable in. We want the real you!
- Men: Formal dress is not expected in the interview, it’s best if you dress in the manner you are most comfortable. If that’s in a suit, go for it. If you’re not a suit kind of guy, a casual button down shirt is great. Should you desire to wear a tie, choose one that is non-shiny and compliments your suit jacket or vest.
- Make-up: If you wear make-up, apply as normal. If you tend to have a shinier complexion, please invest in some powder that closely matches your skin tone. You may not be accustomed to having powder on your face, but you’ll be happy about this extra step once under the bright lights!

Don't
- Avoid plaids, stripes, or checks — the smaller the check, plaid, or stripe, the worse it shows up on camera. These patterns create a distracting moire on-screen.
- Consider staying away from “loud” patterns in general. Unless this is your personal style and you really want to make a statement.
- Limit glittery material, sequins, or anything which is super shiny and reflects light. We’re talking show or costume jewelry here — your favorite “normal scale” jewelry will be fine.
- Make-up: Whereas glowing skin tends to reflect a youthful appearance in daily life, it just doesn’t work that way on camera. You may not be accustomed to having powder on your face, but you’ll be happy about this extra step once under the bright lights! I always bring a powder compact to the shoot day, just in case.
